The owners of Samantha Close approached James Dale Architects to help reimagine their 1980’s semi-detached house, ensuring the property could continue to work for their family and continue to support their changing needs.
The essence of the project involved re-looking and re-thinking the existing space, to create the maximum impact on the property but with minimal structural changes.
Work included a modest extension and reconfiguring the ground floor alongside a full refurbishment of the house, delivering an additional bedroom/office, shower room and providing additional living space for family life.
On the ground floor a rear extension and side extension replacing the existing garage has improved the functionality of the layout. The plan has remained relatively unchanged; by taking down a non-structural wall between the kitchen and hall the space has been opened up to create a bright and spacious kitchen.
Cork flooring is used predominately throughout the ground floor, internally the windows are finished with a clear lacquer and the walls are left with a raw plaster finish, bringing a natural warmth and texture throughout the interior.
To create the much-needed additional bedroom, half of the side extension has been utilised creating a multi-functional garden room to be used as an additional bedroom or home working space. The front half has been kept as a bike store and shower room.
All the existing chunky Upvc window frames have been replaced throughout the house, introducing modern slim line framing which has given the illusion of enlarging all the windows without structurally altering the dimensions of the physical openings. The new windows are aluminum clad timber windows, with a clear lacquer internally and the external aluminum are finished in a striking pink adding an element of fun to the exterior design.
The renovations of the second floor have updated and refreshed the bedrooms and family bathroom. The master bedroom is completed with calming tones, oak industrial parquet flooring delivering a light and perfectly tranquil space. The central circulation space as been finished in a bright, warm yellow, which brings further warmth to the house and almost glows when the daylight falls on it.
