James Dale Architects were appointed on The Mount Pleasant project, creating a contemporary living space for this traditional Victorian terrace house in Tottenham, north London. The scheme has included an extensive renovation, refurbishment and a distinctive extension wrapped in golden copper cladding.
The home was in need of some updating, it had previously been extended but with very little overall planning and as such the inside space had become a series of compartmentalised rooms, which did not optimise the available space. The original extension was just a room that was placed onto the rear of the property, without integrating to the existing home it had become underused space.
Internally the extensive reconfiguration has resulted in a beautiful modern, open plan kitchen and living space at the back of the house, with large glazed doors that connect seamlessly to the garden beyond. By moving the WC from the middle of the house, to place it under the stairs it has allowed the whole internal space to be opened up, allowing for the modern living arrangement the client desired.
The modern kitchen is flooded with natural light, with large picture windows and a skylight installed to transform the area from a dark and uninviting space, to a bright and airy room. The galley kitchen is designed around a kitchen island finished with distinctive teal units, a fresh white worktop and white hexagonal wall tiling. The flooring is used to differentiate between the two spaces, in the kitchen area a blue tile is used which changes as you move into the living space to striking light ash parquet floor, laid in a herringbone patten which offers a calmer feel to this area of the house.
The reimagined extension uses modern architectural language to celebrate the contemporary addition, allowing the history of the home to be easily understood. The distinctive copper cladding on the exterior offers a durable and high-quality finish, which is also aesthetically striking. The copper has a warm golden surface, which glows when caught by the sun.
